Old E’s eased past visitors Tredworth in a 10 try victory at Hallen on Saturday. In an impressive first-half performance E’s built up a match winning lead through tries from Gareth Fuge (2), Jack Bartlett (2), captain Dan Wegrzyn, and Adam Ralls. Despite a lull at the start of the 2nd half, producing 2 interception tries from Tredworth, E’s recovered to stretch their lead thanks to touchdowns from Giles Brandrith, Rich Loader, Stafford Lloyd and Fuge completing his hat-trick. Dom Swann was in good form with the boot converting 9 from 10.
Old E’s had a mixed weekend on the pitch against St Brendans Old Boys at a very well attended afternoon at Hallen on Saturday. The 2nd XV got the afternoon underway with an early kick-off and ran out comfortable winners, Peter Abel scoring a hat-trick and James Gross with 2 tries.
The 1st XV faired less well going down 21-13 in a scrappy match. With a strong wind at their backs the home side led 8-0 at the break thanks to a try from Guy Garnett and a penalty from Dom Swann. But they put themselves under a lot of pressure in the 2nd half and couldn’t stop Brendans crossing 3 times. Despite a late score from Alex Potts, starting within his own half, E’s fell to their 2nd league defeat.
Old E’s threw away a 7 point half-time lead to agonisingly lose by a single point away at Kingswood on Saturday. In the opening league match of the season E’s just edged the first half thanks to a superb individual effort by vice-captain Chris Carter. Picking up the ball on the half-way Carter broke free and danced past the fullback one-on-one showing the sort of footwork a back would be proud of. He outpaced the covering defence to touch-down under the posts to leave Dom Swann with the easiest of conversions.
The 2nd half was a see-saw affair with the lead changing hands several times. Kingswood added a penalty and a converted try to go ahead and although E’s looked a long way of their best form, they but kept battling to stay in the game. Winger Adam Ralls crossed with 15 minutes remaining to give E’s a one point lead but with just 5 minutes left Kingswood crossed for what would be the match-winning try. E’s threw everything at the home side and put Ralls over again from close range but the last-gasp conversion attempt was missed from wide on the right hand side.
