Old E's 90-3 Cainscross

Old E’s signed-off their league season in style with a comprehensive 90-3 victory over Cainscross on Saturday. The home side wasted little time in opening their account with James Gross crossing for the first of his 5 tries. Ben Worthington, Gareth Fuge, and Dom Swann also crossed in the first half to leave the half-time score 38-0.

Both Carter brothers, Chris and Nick, got in the act in the second half with a try a piece before Worthingon added his second with James Almond and Graham Hargreaves also crossing. 10 Swann conversions made the final score 90-3.

E’s now complete their season with a tour to Newquay which will see them take on Newquay Hornets on Friday 24/04.

Tetbury 10-13 Old E's
Old E's got back to winning ways in the league with a narrow victory away to Tetbury. E's had the best of the first but squandered at least two good try scoring opportunities, having settle for a single penalty from the boot of Dom Swann. A second penalty early in teh 2nd half extended the lead to 0-6 before Tetbury struck back with a penalty of their own and then a close range try which was converted. At 10-6 down it looked like E's might live to regret their earlier missed chances but with less than 10 minutes remaining Guy Garnett pounced on a lose ball from a Tetbury line-out, fly-hacked over the line and won the foot-race to claim the try. With the conversion added, E's held on to win a match that should have been more comfortable than the score suggests.

Old E's 12-24 Kingswood
E's paid the price for a slow start to the second half, leaving themselves too much to do against local rivals Kingswood. Playing into a strong headwind in the first half, E's played some of their best rugby of the season with some good spells of territory and possession but Kingswood struck first through a close range try from a maul. E's responded well but just before half-time a loose pass in the Kingswood 22m area went straight to the away side's winger for breakaway try.

At 0-12 at half time it was anyone's game but the home side were punished for a lack of concentration from the restart. Kingswood made their way upfield on the back of 2 penalties before crossing for a try within a minute of the interval. This clearly rattled E's who then conceded a further score just minutes later. With a 24 point deficite it was always going to be a tough ask and proved too much despites tries from Gareth Fuge and Dom Swann. Although E's will take some positives from the game, most notably the continued form of the pack, it will go down as a missed opportunity.

Greyhound 0-22 Old E's

Old E’s registered a third consecutive league victory on Saturday and another clean sheet in the process. The opponents were newly promoted Greyhound from Hereford, previously level on points with E’s but somewhat of an unknown quantity. The opening phases were dominated by penalties with Greyhound having the best of the territory but E’s struck on their first real visit to the home side’s 22m. Greyhound held out for several phases before forcing a knock-on but the resulting scrum was no relief as the dominant E’s pack drove their opponents off the ball. Matt Darbon took the ball forward, unfortunately resulting in a nasty head injury which ended his afternoon, but the ball found its way to centre Ed Tofts who crossed for the opening score. E’s then extended their lead almost instantly – fullback Adam Ralls broke from his own half, found Tofts in support who fed winger James Almond to score, capping the best move of the game. Dom Swann added the conversion.

Greyhound responded well in the second half but E’s were able to withstand everything thrown at them. A Swann penalty took the visitors three scores ahead before winger Graham Hargreaves pounced on a cross field kick to score just before full time to seal the victory. Overall a fairly controlled performance from Old E’s built on a superb display from the pack who grew more dominant as the game progressed.
